Artist 1. Robert Hofmann (Courtesy Mark Topp)
Born in Vienna Austria, Mr. Hofmann studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Here he won the portrait prize in his freshman year. He soon became assisitant to the then foremost portrait painter of Imperial Vienna, John Quincy Adams, the great - grandson of our 6th president.
In his junior an senior years his summer vacations were spent studying in France, Belgium and Holland.
During World War I, Hofmann saw service with the German and Turkish forces. After the war he continued his studies at the Vienna Academy and in 1922 won the coveted Rome Prize, a traveling fellowship, and toured Italy, Greece and Egypt. On his return to Vienna, Hofmann existed as a portrait painter through commissioned work of affluent aristocracy and prominent industrialists of central Europe.
With the outbreak of World War II Hofmann traveled to England where in London the Harrods Emporium provided him a studio to continue his work. With the event of Dunkirk all this changed. He was interned and by request of the authorities volunteered to travel to Australia. Upon his arrival at the internment camp in Melbourne (Actually, Hay, up the Murambeegee River, from Melbourne) the knowledge of his skills as a portrait painter had proceeded him and commissions for his work were awaiting his arrival.
The famous sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic, encouraged Hofmann to come to the United States and in 1948 on a visit to his sister in Syracuse, decided to stay and during this time did portraits of Mestrovic, Bishop and Mrs. Peabody, Dr. Willis carrier and many others. His portrait of mestrovic is now owned by the Everson Museum and he is represented in private galleries and museums all over the world.
